headed westward on a train to try my skill and luck
i've played the game long as i've lived and i've won some and i've lost
but anytime the stakes get high i'll win at any cost

last night I got to reno late but I found me a game
stakes went high, I drew an ace and that's when the trouble came
see when I showed that winnin' hand those suckers got upset
they claimed that ace of mine came from the bottom of the deck

well is stood up from that table quick and I left the money there
drew my gun and fired one into the smoky air
and just before I made the door a wind rushed by my ear
a bullet split the door frame lord I was sure my time was near
